Four Pebbles, Endless Hope: Holocaust Survivor Inspires HBT Students with a Message of Strength and Perseverance

Four Pebbles, Endless Hope: Holocaust Survivor Inspires HBT Students with a Message of Strength and Perseverance

Four small pebbles became a lifeline for young Marion Blumenthal Lazan as she endured the Holocaust, one of history’s darkest chapters.

At just 4 years old, she and her parents and older brother were forced into multiple concentration camps during World War II. Over the 6½ brutal years she spent imprisoned, she created a quiet ritual to help her cope with the terror surrounding her.

“I decided that if I could find four pebbles of roughly the same size and shape, it would mean the four members of my family would survive,” she told an audience of about 300 sixth graders at HBT Middle School. “This game gave me something to hold on to—some distant hope.”

Messages of hope, perseverance, and strength were woven throughout her story, offering students a powerful reminder of resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship..

At the end of her presentation, she invited the students to listen to a song inspired by her four perfect pebbles. A brief Q&A followed, giving students the chance to reflect on her experiences and ask their own thoughtful questions.
